Concluded in 1961, the settlement with Nepal is also significant in light of the ongoing conflict between China and India. A boundary settlement was one aspect of the effort by China to gain more influence in Nepal as a buffer state. The Sikkim boundary was never disputed by China and Bhutan was settled with not real problems, but both are strategically important buffer countries for China.
